They look like strange spiraling holes which you find dotted across the valleys of southern Peru, south of Lima. These have puzzled generations of archaeologists. They are called Nasca puquios: spiral holes found in the arid desert of that region. Their origin remained a mystery until a group of Italian experts solved it. The puquios were a sophisticated hydraulic system built by the ancient Nasca people to retrieve water from underground aquifers.
